Nickelback Sucks

or do they?

nickelback sucks
The general public doesn’t seem to think so. Currently (as of December 9, 2008) they have two songs on the top songs chart of iTunes, most from the rock genre. Although, according to Facebook groups and Google, the hatred is actually just about even with the love of Nickelback. A Google search of “nickelback sucks” generated 12,200 hits with 126 Facebook groups dedicated to the mediocrity of this Canadian bands music. One group is called “Nickelback is gay and Chad Kroeger sucks the fat one”.

This is a discussion that I feel we need to have. Nickelback, in my mind, is one of the most polarizing bands on the face of the planet. I’m going to lump them in with Dave Matthews Band, Hoobastank, and Linkin Park. These bands are extremely popular yet a lot of people think they suck. Why is this? It’s nothing new but music is a subjective area. Everyone has their tastes. A person who was raised in a violent household or got little attention as a child, will relate to Linkin Park or emo bands.

For the most part, I like popular music. I like Nickelback, Hoobastank, and Linkin Park to some extent. Their songs take me back to a time when I was gaining favor socially with most of the friends that I have today. It’s a nostalgia based appeal to me. I compare it to the way that Journey is popular now. On an episode of Family Guy, the gang sang karaoke in a bar, the song being Journey’s “Can’t Stop Believing”. It’s all of a sudden popular now. Why? Nostalgia. Rick Astley. Same thing. I guarantee in like 10 to 15 years we’ll all be saying the sentence, “Boy I remember this song,” to a lame Nickelback ballad.

Music is the only area of life where you can basically cut someone down for liking something you don’t. I guess you can do that with any kind of art, but music is the big one. So to conclude, when you say a band sucks, just remember your band sucks too.

Nickelback’s ubiquity does not give it anything but that. However, all music on the radio gains strength from the weekness of the “lowest common denominator”. It is a universal flaw in all of mainstream, popular culture. It lacks depth or perspective that is gained through attention and perception, and lacking all of these components are what make the “lowest common denominator” fall in love with their simple entertainment.

Now, you ask, what is this “lowest common denominator”? They are the people who reside inside themselves to not acheive anything more than procreating, eating and working any job that pays them money. They will frequently disallow themselves success because they would not do the work and tell themselves they don’t have the time, money, or strength. Often they are terrified of the future and develop fear about anything someone wants them to with out even delving into what and why they fear the certain object or subject.

OH MY GOD!!! How pretentious are you? Nickelback’s ubiquity does not give it anything but that. What does this mean? Are you saying that Nickelback is popular because they are popular? I guess you’re saying they are popular because of a broad based genre that appeals to a lot of people. In my opinion, there’s a place for it. Obviously. The market says it wants it, so its successful.

And why is everything in the top 40 “LCD”? Granted, a lot of it is. You my friend are putting a lot of music in to a box that they don’t belong in. You bring this pseudo-intellectual argument to my blog, without any kind of substance, and justify it with a fallacious argument.

I’m not a big fan of the mainstream either. But, you know what? It has it’s place. There would be no counter-culture without mainstream culture.

Nickelback makes 3 Doors Down sound good.

  5. eckert Says:

that doesnt change the fact that nickelback blows goats.

  6. Benry Says:

I know, you see. 3 Doors down is terrible, and if they sound good compared to Nickelback, then that emphasizes how terrible Nickelback is.

Man I wish I could sing in a raspy voice about sex and how tough we are in our designer pants.

  7. Miranda Says:

John, your friends suck. I’m sorry you have friends that have such crappy opinions about music.

“Music is the only area of life where you can basically cut someone down for liking something you don’t.”

Very true, other than food, friends, movies, video games, what computer you buy, the college you go to, the sports team you support…

But other than the 2.8 million other things people cut down other people for liking, you nailed it!

Oh, and by the way, while enjoying music is subjective, music can be crap. Some music is better than other music, some musicians are better than other musicians.

I do hope you’re 12, otherwise, you need help. You can start by not writing.

  9. jack Says:
